Strong and Weak Augmentability in Calculus of Variations

چکیده
In this paper we derive sufficient conditions for local optimality, for the Lagrange problem in the calculus of variations involving mixed equality constraints, by means of the notion of augmented Lagrangians. It is well-known that the standard necessary conditions for that problem can be easily obtained under the assumption of augmentability, instead of the usual one of normality. On the other hand, as we show in this paper, the standard sufficient conditions for a strong (weak) minimum imply strong (weak) augmentability. Since this kind of augmentability implies that the extremal under consideration is a local solution, the results given provide an alternative approach to the classical theory of sufficient conditions. Key–Words: Augmentability, Lagrange problem, calculus of variations, equality constraints, sufficient conditions

NON-POLYNOMIAL SPLINE FOR THE NUMERICAL SOLUTION OF PROBLEMS IN CALCULUS OF VARIATIONS
A Class of new methods based on a septic non-polynomial spline function for the numerical solution of problems in calculus of variations is presented. The local truncation errors and the methods of order 2th, 4th, 6th, 8th, 10th, and 12th, are obtained. The inverse of some band matrixes are obtained which are required in proving the convergence analysis of the presented method. Convergence anal...
متن کاملAn analytic study on the Euler-Lagrange equation arising in calculus of variations
The Euler-Lagrange equation plays an important role in the minimization problems of the calculus of variations. This paper employs the differential transformation method (DTM) for finding the solution of the Euler-Lagrange equation which arise from problems of calculus of variations. DTM provides an analytical solution in the form of an infinite power series with easily computable components. S...
متن کاملDirect approach to the problem of strong local minima in Calculus of Variations
The paper introduces a general strategy for identifying strong local minimizers of variational functionals. It is based on the idea that any variation of the integral functional can be evaluated directly in terms of the appropriate parameterized measures. We demonstrate our approach on a problem of W 1,∞ weak-* local minima—a slight weakening of the classical notion of strong local minima. We o...
متن کاملStrong Minimizers of the Calculus of Variations on Time Scales and the Weierstrass Condition
We introduce the notion of strong local minimizer for the problems of the calculus of variations on time scales. Simple examples show that on a time scale a weak minimum is not necessarily a strong minimum. A time scale form of the Weierstrass necessary optimality condition is proved, which enables to include and generalize in the same result both continuous-time and discrete-time conditions. M...
متن کاملPower Allocation Strategies in Block-Fading Two-Way Relay Networks
This paper aims at investigating the superiority of power allocation strategies, based on calculus of variations in a point-to-point two-way relay-assisted channel incorporating the amplify and forward strategy. Single and multilayer coding strategies for two cases of having and not having the channel state information (CSI) at the transmitters are studied, respectively. Using the notion of cal...
